You are more than your academic scores!

Let go of the things you think define you and be better

I love to take a dig at our fixed mindset friends, not that they are bad or anything like that but sometimes they cannot let go and be themselves. One of the characteristics of the fixed mindset person is his inability to look "stupid" in front of others. After all, many of them (us) have invested a lot of time and effort in building ourselves up to where we are right now. Being in Singapore, we are all too familiar with the competitive education system, and we have spent countless hours in tuition, mugging over school books, over assessment books, over homework, to be who we are today. We are now defined by our academic prowess. It signifies that we have arrived. We are our academic achievement.

But are we?

The problem with this form of thinking is that it assumes that there is a pinnacle to learning; a finite element in our intellect. And that then sets the stage for who we are for the rest of our lives. Just think about it, after 10 or 15 years of studying, we end up defining ourselves for the next 30 to 40 years? How can that be? Unless the world stopped revolving, and everyone got out at some remote planet at the same time, this cannot happen. So we need to continue learning.

We therefore need to accept that:

1. Our academic achievements do NOT define who we are

2. We can be better than we are today, even if we're 66!

3. Learning needs a humble attitude - realising that we don't know more than we do, and then going out there and learning more!

4. We need to loosen up!

So yes, let go of your inner inhibitions, your self-perceptions, and be more than you are right now! And when you do that, you will realise that no one is really paying that much attention on you anyway!
